How to find your first overseas buyer from India

Research a suitable market, build a focused prospect list and verify the buyer before agreeing an export order.

The quick answer

Finding an overseas buyer begins with a product and market that you can actually serve. Confirm specifications, supply capacity, costs and destination requirements before paying for leads or promising a delivery date.

Directories, trade bodies and exhibitions can support research, but a listing or introduction does not guarantee a buyer or payment. Use DGFT and the relevant export bodies for current requirements, and review payment risk with your bank or adviser.

Before you begin

  • A clear product specification and supply capacity.
  • A destination-market compliance and costing assessment.
  • A prospect-tracking sheet and verification process.

See how the pieces connect

  1. Prepare

    Define an export-ready offer.

  2. Research

Find businesses that actually use or distribute it.

  3. Verify

Check identity, demand and payment risk.

  4. Quote

Agree terms and progress a controlled first order.

Work through the steps

  1. Define the product and offer

Record materials, specification, packaging, minimum order, lead time and capacity. Confirm the applicable product classification and destination standards with competent advisers. Do not promise certificates you do not have.

  2. Choose one suitable market

Research demand, transport, duties, importer requirements and competition. Distinguish an end retailer from an importer or distributor. Start with a market whose requirements and economics you understand.

  3. Build a focused prospect list

Use relevant directories, sector associations, exhibitions and trade-body resources. Record the official website, role, product fit and evidence. A paid lead list is not a verified order book.

  4. Verify before committing

Check the legal entity, contact domain, trading role and payment destination. Speak through independently verified channels. Ask your bank or ECGC about applicable risk assessment or cover and its conditions.

  5. Send a relevant introduction

Explain the product fit, supported capacity and one clear next step. Share a concise specification sheet. Do not send hundreds of unrelated messages or treat a polite response as a purchase commitment.

  6. Quote and test the relationship

Agree specification, currency, delivery basis, payment terms and document responsibilities. Consider a controlled sample or first shipment with appropriate safeguards. Reconcile buyer acceptance, dispatch and payment evidence.

A prospect pipeline has several stages

Illustrative tracking stages, not promised conversion rates.

Stage Evidence
Researched prospect Product fit and official contact
Qualified enquiry Actual requirement and decision-maker
Verified buyer Legal and commercial checks
Agreed order Accepted terms and payment safeguards

Only an accepted commercial agreement moves the relationship toward an order. A directory entry or meeting remains a lead until independently qualified.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Buying a list and calling every entry a verified buyer.
  • Quoting before understanding destination requirements.
  • Shipping on unsecured promises without reviewing risk.
  • Assuming a trade-body introduction guarantees payment.
